2025 John A. Lent Scholarship Awarded
The 2025 John A. Lent Scholarship in Comics Studies committee is proud to announce that Mathieu Li-Goyette has been selected as this year's winner for his submission, "Chalk Talks."
Dr. Li-Goyette is a film critic, film programmer, and comics researcher with a PhD in comparative literature from the Université de Montréal. At the Université de Montréal, his master’s thesis focused on the materiality of black dots in the work of Jack Kirby (L’Univers dans un point noir: esthétique et matérialité dans l’œuvre de Jack Kirby, 2015) and his dissertation on the emergence of the American comic strip in the newspaper ecosystem at the turn of the 20th century (Chalk Talks: Écosophie séquentielle du comic strip américain [1846-1929], 2023). He is currently a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Amsterdam.
Mathieu Li-Goyette will deliver the John A. Lent Award Lecture during this year's ICAF conference at San Diego State University, April 10-12, 2025.
The Lent Scholarship, named for pioneering teacher and researcher Dr. John Lent, is offered to encourage student research into comic art. ICAF awards the Lent Scholarship to a current student who has authored, or is in the process of authoring, a substantial research-based writing project about comics.
